شَيخٌ كَبِيرٌ قَد تَخَدَّدَ لَحمُهُ
أَفنى ثَلاثَ عَمائِمٍ أَلوَانا
An old shaykh whose flesh has withered away
Has worn out three caps of varied hues:
سَوداءَ داجِيَةٍ وَسَحقَ مُفوَّفٍ
وَدُروسَ مُخلَقَةٍ تَلُوحُ هِجَانا
Jet black, light brown, and quilted white,
And lessons of piety gleam through.
ثُمَّ المَنِيَّةُ بَعدَ ذلكَ كُلِّهِ
وَكَأَنَّما يُعنى بِذاكَ سِوانا
Then death comes after all of that
As if it cared not a whit.
