ʿUbayd—O slender bough of the bān tree,
O scion of the houris of Paradise,
ʿUbayd—O crown
of the festival morning,
O adornment of the feast in beauty,
O delight of the garden,
O wedding night in all its sweetness,
and O morning of the circumcision feast,
O cure for every illness of mine,
O glory that redeems every abasement,
O furthest hope of every yearning soul,
and O appeasement of the angry one,
O radiance of reunion after the
rebuff and estrangement,
O joy of bounty after the
sorrow of deprivation,
O Night of Destiny—O you in whom
all hopes abide,
and O crescent of my joy
at Eid al-Fitr after Ramadan!
You have gathered all the charms
from every beloved haunt.
Wondrous in beauty and in character,
in the guise of the singing girls’ elegance,
in the hideousness of a sodomite,
in the brazen openness of an adulterer,
with the lovely coquetry of fair women,
and the noblest of youths.
With him is the very model of the houris,
the very model of Paradise’s immortal youths.
Every marvel of beauty
has been gathered into a single human being:
his stature is like slender boughs,
his rump like the dunes,
his eyes like gazelles,
his fragrance like sweet basil,
his cheek like pure gold,
his smiling mouth like coral.
His face possesses qualities
that weary my tongue in their description.
I see you as one of Eden’s houris,
stolen away from Riḍwān.
And if you are an Adamite,
then there is no second like you.
