1. وشمس خدورٍ لو بدت من خدورِها

    لرضوان أزرَت بالجنان وحُورِها

    A setting sun, if it rose from its setting

    Would adorn the heavens and its maidens with grace

  2. إذا ما بدت لو لم يكن ماءُ وجهِها

    يدافع عنّا لاحترقنا بنورِها

    If her face's water did not protect us

    We'd have burned from the blaze of its light

  3. إذا ما أجالت طرفَها سجد الهوى

    لأجفانها من غنجها وفتورِها

    When she lifts her glances, passion bows down

    To her lashes' languor and weakness

  4. تَعلَّم غصنُ البان من حركاتها

    فنوناً وما يأتي بعُشر عشيرِها

    The branch of the acacia tree learned from her movements

    Arts that don't match a tenth of her arts

  5. يُرى حَليُها من حسنها متزيناً

    ومن طِيبها يزدادُ طِيبُ عبيرِها

    You see her jewelry adorned by her beauty

    And her scent grows sweeter from her sweetness

  6. إذا مسها لينُ الحريرِ فجسمُها

    ينعِّم ما قد مسَّها من حريرها

    When smooth silk touches her body

    It revels in what it has touched of her silk

  7. لها نعمةٌ لو في المعاد تقسمت

    لعاشت بها الموتى الى نفخ صُورها

    She has a blessing - if shared in the hereafter

    It would revive the dead till the blow of the horn

  8. ولو ضربت بين القبور بنَغمةٍ

    لقهقهتِ الموتى لها من قبورِها

    If she sang a melody between the graves

    The dead would laugh to her from their tombs

  9. لو اَنَّ سليمانَ النبيَّ يخالُها

    توهَّمها بلقيسَ فوق سريرِها

    If Solomon the prophet imagined her

    He'd mistake her for Bilqis upon her throne

  10. فتاةٌ لها عندي حديثٌ وإنما

    لواحظُها قد حدَّثَت عن ضميرِها

    A girl who tells me tales though

    My observation of her spoke of her conscience

  11. تُؤخِّر عن قلبي نصيبَ سرورِه

    وقد عَجَّلت للعين بعضَ سرورِها

    She delays my share of joy for my heart

    And was quick to give my eyes some of its joy

  12. إذا جئت عطشاناً إلى ماء وصلها

    فما يُنقَع الصادي بصفو غديرِها

    When I come to her water thirsty

    The thirsty one cannot be quenched by the purity of her stream

  13. لها صدقُ إعراضٍ وزُورُ تعرُّضٍ

    فيا حَسرَتا من صدقها لي وزُورِها

    She has truthful aloofness and false overtures

    What loss from her truth to me and her falseness

  14. تُرضّي خيال الناس عند مغيبها

    وتُبدي إشارات المنى في حضورِها

    She pleases people's imaginations when absent

    And shows hints of wishes when present

  15. وقولوا لها إني أسيرٌ بحبِّها

    فهل عندها من رحمةٍ لأسيرِها

    And say to her, "I am a captive of her love"

    Does she have any mercy for her captive?

  16. ستتلف روحي وهي روحٌ خطيرة

    لئن بخلت عنّي ببذل خطيرِها

    She will ruin my soul which is precious

    If she is miserly to me with her generosity

  17. فإن أحسنت جازيتُ ذاك وإن يكن

    غروراً فلا جازيتُها بغرورِها

    If she is good I will reward that even if

    It is conceit, I will not reward her conceit

  18. فيا سُؤلَ قلبي أوضِحي مسلك المُنى

    لروحي فقد حَيَّرتِها في أُمورها

    Oh my troubled heart, clarify the path of wishes

    For my soul, for you have confused it in its matters

  19. أجَنَّة وصلٍ نرتعي في نعيمها

    أنارُ صدودٍ نصطلي في سعيرِها

    Gardens of union we graze in its bliss

    Hellfires of estrangement we roast in its flame

  20. فإنَّ حراماً أن تُعَرَّض مهجة

    لموتٍ ولم يُعلَم مكانُ مصيرِها

    It is forbidden for a heart to be displayed

    To death not knowing where its fate lies

  21. فها أنا روحي في السياق فزَخرفي

    جِنانَ مناها وابعثي ببشيرِها

    Its heavens and send it a messenger

    And witness what my missive casts from me

  22. وشاهدُ ما ألقاه مني رسالتي

    أتَتكِ سطورُ الدمع فوق سطورِها

    Lines of tears upon its lines
