كم أستغيثُ وكم أشكو وأعتذرُ
وكم أنُوحُ وكم آتي وكم أذَرُ
How often I cry for help, how often I complain and apologize;
how often I lament, how often I weep, how often I desist.
لو كنتُ أشكو صباباتي إلى حجرٍ
لكان أو كاد لي من عنده الظفرُ
If I poured out my ardent longings to a stone,
it would—or nearly would—have yielded me what I sought.
أفنيت عمري في شُكرٍ ومعذرةٍ
من غير ذنبٍ فهلا كنتَ تَغتفِرُ
I have spent my life in gratitude and apology,
though guilty of no sin—why, then, would you not forgive?
