لا ابتلى اللَه عاشقاً بفراقِ

فيُلاقي من جهده ما أُلاقي

May God never afflict a lover with separation,

to endure in its anguish what I endure.

أيّ شَيءٍ أشدّ من فَقد إلفٍ

بعد أُنس الهوى وطِيب العناقِ

What could be harsher than losing an intimate beloved

after love’s companionship and the sweetness of embrace?

فُزتُ من رُؤية الحبيب بعيشٍ

تِهتُ من طِيبهِ على العشّاقِ

From seeing the beloved, I found new life;

through his love, I exulted above all lovers.

وتوهَّمت أنَّه جَنَّةُ الخُل

دِ إلى أن رأيتُه غيرَ باقِ

And I imagined that he was the Paradise of Eter—

nity, until I saw that he would not remain.

سيِّدي أنت كيف بعد عِناق ال

وصلِ أبقى على عَنَاقِ الفراق

My master, how, after the embrace of un—

ion, am I to survive the embrace of separation?
