أكلتُ رُمانةً فعاتبني

فتىً رآها كخَدِّ معشوقهْ

I ate a pomegranate; then a youth reproached me—

a youth who saw that it was like his beloved’s cheek.

فقال خدُّ الحبيب تأكُلُه

فقلت لا بل أمصُّ من ريقِهْ

He said, “The beloved’s cheek—and you eat it?”

I said, “No; rather, I suck some of his saliva.”
