The coming of a year, with thanks for goodness, is welcome;
The prince’s feast remains joined to the feast of righteousness.
The Day of al-ʿArūbah and Nowruz have been brought together,
So today is a day that wears a crown and diadem.
It is a day whose brow is radiant Friday,
And the joy of Nowruz gives it white-marked splendor.
A day composed of two feasts: a feast of piety,
And a feast of kingship—distinction upon distinction.
Delight, then, in your Nowruz, auspicious in its omen,
While happiness twists firm the cord of fortune.
May you live as long as you live amid whatever blessings you desire,
With the shade of glory forever shading you there.
So magnify this day and hold it in reverence;
Its due from you is honor and veneration.
It is a day when crowns are fashioned from blossoms,
For the scion of kings, and garlands for the army.
The world has adorned itself in all its finery,
And figures seem portrayed throughout the garden.
The cloud weeps whenever the meadow smiles upon it,
And the eye of every plant is lined with dew like kohl.
For him the world has led forth its brides in procession,
Clothed in green robes of fine silk,
Turbaned in brocade drawn from their jewels,
All gem-encrusted, each setting finely wrought.
This spring is stolen from the gardens of Paradise,
Bearing their swaying grace and their likeness.
The rose took its color from the beloved’s cheek,
And fragrance owes its cause to the beloved’s breath.
The beloved’s rose is guarded—none may pluck it
Except the eyes; the garden’s rose is freely offered.
Take delight: this day’s sweetness is not concealed,
Nor is this day’s excellence unknown.
Its daylight holds neither heat nor biting cold,
And its night is neither short nor long.
No vanguards of summer’s army are advancing;
Likewise, the forerunner of cold’s army lies in chains.
What a life, in which the spirit’s overflowing grows luxuriant,
And the breeze plays guest among the trees!
Fingers do not contract amid amorous caresses,
Nor do embraces grow wearisome from excessive heat.
The air is pleasant, for the day is temperate,
And pleasures bring the spirits into balance.
Light blossoms amid the green meadows, just as
Lanterns shine within the darkness of night.
Make your day a pair, then, and welcome its morrow:
Life’s portion is both advancement and delay.
Why do you wait while life is still approaching,
The rose smiling and the meadow languishing with love?
We have two springs—one of season and one of generosity—
And a noble lord, majestic in character and openhanded.
He is the prince, the son of Yazdād, through whom
Hardships have grown easy and good things are made easier.
His goodness has tamed the hearts of all the people,
So love of him is welcome within their hearts.
His beneficence has embraced all the people of the East,
And his court is forever peopled with thanksgiving.
To him every hope has come advancing;
He stands forth, for among the people none but he is hoped in.
If all creation nourished by his bounty were counted,
Neither the Jayḥān nor the Nile could give them drink.
He bears signs of good fortune, accompanied
By auspiciousness and judgment that point to success.
Even the bold reckoner’s fingers cannot move
To count all for which you are thanked and petitioned.
No tyrant or rebel remains whom there has not touched
From your outspread hands a crowning and a gift.
O son of Yazdād, whoever entrusted power to you saw
From the first unfolding of your rule fulfillment and surety.
Praise be to God: none of your good deeds is lost,
And never is the bond of thanksgiving to God undone.
Nothing that gratitude adds to it is diminished,
Nor can what beneficence has established be altered.
It is God’s custom to grant increase to the grateful,
And His custom among creation admits no change.
I speak—and though I may lavish praise upon you,
Beside your beneficence, abundance is but little.
O planter of the tree of beneficence, eat its fruit—
A fruit, however, that is eaten through hearing:
Praise whose taste, sipped from mouths, gives delight
As a kiss from the beloved gives delight.
