    You are joyful

And leave the one who loves you worn out and broken

Since you've been gone, sorrow is his only food

And his heart tosses and turns on the embers of sadness

The pain of separation has poisoned me with love

But being with you is the healing antidote I know

You've thrown my heart into confusion and longing

So now in the snare of love it flutters and flaps

The paths to you are cut off from me

By God, I know not how to get to you

So do not ask how I've fared without you

For how fares a body whose soul is veiled from it?

When one is absent from their beloved's face

The spirit of life itself is stolen from their soul

What state is one in who's tasted bliss and sweetness

Only to then be tormented when bliss is gone?

Love's joy is sweeter than life itself

While the anguish of passion is worse than death's agony

I'm driven to misery after tasting delight

And pushed far from what I was once so near

I dwelt in the spirit of paradise in bliss

But now I'm in a fire that rages over me

Most bitter is anguish after joy

Yes, burning after tenderness is most severe

When I summon patience, passion weakens it

My longing holds fast while my patience wavers

When longing and patience both grip the heart

There is no doubt that longing will prevail

One night I visited you, and left you fearful

    Watching, alert to any disapproval

There was joy with you as the honored one

While around you marched the parade of pleasures

If you've shunned me and forgotten me

In my heart you're closer than closeness

For what is worldly life if living it

And tasting delight is but a cloak soon taken?
