أهابُكَ أم أُبدي إليك الذي أُخفي

وطرفك يدري ما يقول له طرفي

Should I confess my love or keep it hidden?

نهاني حيائي منك أن أكشف الهوى

وأغنيتَني بالفهم منك عن الكشفِ

My shyness stops me from revealing my passion,

Yet your understanding spares me from confessing.

تلطفتَ في أمري فإن أك ساعياً

إلى غايةٍ فاللطف يُدرَك باللطفِ

You've been gentle about my situation. If you're

Seeking the goal, gentleness meets gentleness.

تلقَّيتني بالبشر حتى كأنَّما

تبشِّرني بالعَبث أنَّك في كفّي

You greeted me with smiles as if to say:

"Don't worry, you're in good hands with me."

وتُدركني من هيبتي لك وحشةٌ

فتؤنسني بالعطف منك وباللطفِ

And when awe of you made me shy,

You put me at ease with kindness and tact.

تكاملتَ إحساناً وحسناً وفطنةً

وزدتَ كمالاً بالتصنُّع والظَّرفِ

You've perfected kindness, beauty and wisdom,

And added perfection with pretense and grace.

فحبُّك فيه عِصمَةٌ وهو فتنة

فيشفي بما يُضني ويضني بما يشفي

So loving you brings salvation yet temptation -

It heals what hurts me and hurts what heals me.

وتُحيي محبّاً أنت في الحبّ حتفُه

وذا عجبٌ كون الحياة من الحتف

Loving you, one finds in love his end.

Strange that death should come from life!

لك الخير قد عجَّلتَ لي صَفوةَ الهوى

ومثلك عندي لا يُكدِّر ما يصفي

Good sir, you've given me the prime of love.

One like you doesn't trouble what is clear.

فجُد لي بوعدٍ منك أحيا بروحه

وجُد لي مع الوعد الأمانَ من الخُلفِ

Please promise me - your word will revive my soul.

Please, with your promise, assure me of your faith.
