1. نفسُ المُحِبِّ دَواؤها في دائها

    ونعيمُها هو من مكان شقائها

    The lover's soul finds its remedy in its malady,

    Its bliss is from the place of its misery.

  2. فمتى يكون شفاؤها من سقمها

    وسقامُها هو من مكان شفائها

    So when can it be cured of its sickness,

    When its sickness stems from the place of its cure?

  3. في الحبِّ سحر للعقول لأنه

    يغشى النفوسَ بدائها ودوائها

    In love there is a spellbinding of minds,

    For it shrouds the souls with its ailment and remedy.

  4. صفو الهوى يغذو نفوس ذوي الهوى

    والنفسُ لا تُغذى بغير غذائها

    The quintessence of passion nurtures the souls of the passionate,

    While the soul is not nurtured but by its nourishment.

  5. إن الهوى هو في اهتزاز غصونها

    طيش الحليم وفي لحاظ ظبائها

    Verily passion makes the steadfast go astray

    And casts a spell on the eyes of gazelles.

  6. أهل الهوى هم كالرياحين التي

    يبدو الذبول بها لفرقة مائها

    The passionate are like the winds

    Whose withering is seen when their waters separate.

  7. بشعورها وثغورها ونحورها

    وخصورها أبليننا ببلائها

    With their hair, cheeks, and necks they have tested us with tribulation,

    With their waists, breasts, and limbs we incline to their desires.

  8. بخدودها ونهودها وقدودها

    نهوي بأنفسنا إلى أهوائها

    Their sides, backs, and edges

    Take captive those before and behind them.

  9. أعطافُها أردافُها أطرافها

    يسبينَ من قدّامِها وورائها

    A Houri of Paradise, Rizwan its keeper,

    But Malik entrusted with guarding against its access.

  10. حورية رضوانُ خازِنُ وصلها

    لكن توكّلَ مالِكٌ بجفائها

    Blessed is he who dwells in a Garden,

    If the Houri of Heavens were created for him.

  11. طُوبى لساكن جنةٍ لو أنشئت

    حُورُ الجنانِ له على إنشائها

    White and black are its branches, its night and day

    Are but its darkness and illumination.

  12. بيضاء سوداء الفروع فليلُها

    ونهارها لظلامها وضيائها

    A beloved I loved, the torture of her lover is sweet,

    And the slaying of passion is the best witness of it.

  13. معشوقة عشقت عذاب محبها

    حسناً وقتلُ الصب أحسن رائها

    My eye did not part from her except that longing

    Reunited between her pillow and weeping.

  14. ما فارقتها العين إلا واصلت

    بالشوق بين سهادها وبكائها

    I caress my limbs and I imagine them embers,

    Kindled with the flames in the midst of her hillside.

  15. إني أمسُّ جوارحي فأظنُّها

    جمراً تأجّج في لظى بُرَحائها

    I fear, if I gain nearness to her,

    The pressing of my entrails to her entrails.

  16. إني لأشفق إن ظفرتُ بقربها

    من ضم أحشائي إلى أحشائها

    If I were to kiss her, I would melt her

    With the kindling of breaths in her elevations.

  17. لو أنّني لاثمتُها لأذبتُها

    بتوقُّد الأنفاس في صُعدائها

    I saw death depicted in life

    In a scene of her separation and meeting.

  18. أبصرتُ موتاً في الحياة مُصَوَّراً

    في مشهدٍ لفراقها ولقائها

    I intended to turn to others, not out of love for them,

    And ignored her, not out of hatred for her.

  19. قد همتُ بالرقباء لا من حُبِّهم

    وصددتُ عنها ليس من بغضائها

    So I began to look upon her with all my limbs,

    In some of my turning to others.

  20. فطفقت أرمقها بكل جوارحي

    في بعض إقبالي على رُقبائها

    Thus I see my food in passion as disappointing,

    In her nearness to me and her distancing.

  21. فأرى طعامي في الهوى ذا غُصَّةٍ

    في قربها منّي وفي إقصائها

    So be patient, perhaps you will win,

    For souls have triumphed after prolonged strife.

  22. فاصبر لعلّك أن تفوزَ فربما

    فازت نفوسٌ بعد طُولِ عنائها

    A world adorning for mankind its desires,

    Degrading its men to its women.

  23. دنيا تُزَيِّن للورى شهواتها

    فيما يذلُّ رجالُها لنسائها

    The share of men from women is that

    Their free masters are seen as slaves to their bondmaids.

  24. حظُّ الرجال من النساء بأن يُرى

    أحرارُ سادتها عبيدَ إمائها

    What can be the beauty of a free soul,

    One day when the beauty of its honor is robbed?

  25. ماذا يكون جمالَ نفسٍ حُرَّةٍ

    يوماً إذا سُلبت جميلَ عزائها

    By Allah, the noble is not ennobled by lineage,

    Save by the estimable qualities of his deeds.

  26. تاللَهِ لا شرف الشريف بنسبةٍ

    إلا بما يُعتَدُّ من آلائها

    So too the tribes of Nizar, their pride

    Lies in the nobility and generosity of their deeds.

  27. وكذا القبائل من نزارٍ حظُّها

    في الفخر حَسبُ سماحِها وغنائها

    As for Rabee'ah, never shall the rope of its nobility fray,

    Nor the knot of its loyalty unravel.

  28. أما ربيعةُ لا يضيع ذمامُها

    أبداً ولا ينحلُّ عقدُ وفائها

    Rabee'ah the nimble steed who reconnoiters the encampments

    And returns at its morn and eve.

  29. فربيعةُ الفَرَسِ التي تَقري القِرى

    وتُعيد عند صباحِها ومسائها

    If challenged in munificence, it is not deterred

    From its might and generosity.

  30. إن زُوحِمت في المكرمات فإنها

    ما زُحزِحَت عن بأسِها وسخائها
