بوصل الحبيب تطيب الحياةُ

وعقلُ الحبيب تمام النِّعَمْ

When I meet my beloved, life becomes sweet,

And the mind of my beloved is perfect bounty.

أيا واحد الحسن يا من غدا

لهُ الحسنُ مُتَّبِعاً مُقتَسَمْ

O you of singular beauty, you who have become

The embodiment of beauty, divided and shared.

بردف الكثيب وقدِّ القضيب

وعين الغزال ووجه الصنمْ

With thighs like a sand dune and a slender waist,

The eyes of a gazelle and the face of an idol.

إذا أنت سارَرت في مجلسٍ

فإنك في أهله مُتَّهَمْ

If you walk into a gathering,

You will be suspected by its people.

فهذا يقول قد اغتابنا

وذا يستريب وذا يحتشمْ

Some will say you have wronged us,

Others will doubt and some will be shy.

يقولون لو كان هذا السّرا

رُ خيراً لمَا كان بالمُتَّهمْ

They say if this secret were

Good, it would not be suspected.

ولن يُخدَع المرءُ في مجلسٍ

كما لا تُصاد الظِّبا في الحرَمْ

One is not deceived in a gathering

As gazelles are not hunted in the sanctuary.

كذاك الرعاءُ تُسِيءُ الظنونَ

إذا ما الذئاب خلت بالغَنَمْ

Likewise, the shepherds suspect

When wolves mix with the sheep.

ومن يتعدَّ حدودَ الظِّراف

خشيتُ عليه حلولَ النِّقَمْ

And whoever exceeds the limits of propriety,

I fear the descent of curses upon him.

فضربُ العصا مؤلمٌ ساعةً

وضربُ اللسان طويل الألمْ

For the blow of a stick hurts for an hour,

But the blow of the tongue hurts endlessly.
