    إذ أنت متَّبعٌ والشرط دينارُ

    A drink for times past, how good they were,

    When you were compliant and virtue was but a dinar.

  2. أيام وجهك مصقول عوارضه

    وللربيع على خديك أنوارُ

    The days your face whose cheeks shone bright,

    And on your cheeks spring had cast its light.

  3. حانت منيته فاسودَّ عارضه

    كما يُسوَّدُ بعد الميت الدارُ

    His death has come and darkened his cheek

    As the home is darkened when death does reek.
