Say to my Lord, O Marvel of the Age

O crescent moon of darkness on a flexing branch

O sick of eyelids, you have made my body ill

With the illness of languishing eyelids

O gazelle of gardens, deprive me not

Of the garden of union, O gazelle of the gardens

God has gathered in you, O solace of my eye

All the finest qualities and benevolence

So it's as if from your beautiful face I graze

My sights in the gardens' groves

And it's as if from the archness of your eyes' glances

I listen to the singing of the gazelles

And it's as if from your shapely figure in its shape

Of pliant tenderness of the branches

And it's as if from the refinement of your words in their

Delicacy I scent the essence of ruby and coral

And it's as if when you incline toward me

I slip from possessing to contentment

And it's as if when I inhale your breath

I smell the bouquet of apples and quince

And it's as if from your sweet scent in sweet

    Fragrance of flowers and basil

And it's as if from your apple cheeks in their

    Gardens of breeze and saffron

An angel you are, no doubting, so never

Could these qualities gather in a human

Dark-lipped, yet soft, scented yet cool

Musk mixed with rose-water and seeds of musk willow

These qualities were sealed by a mole that

Turns eyes from you when face to face

My lord, you are beauty's mine, so what loss

If you were kindness's mine instead?

O healer of hearts, my heart is sick

So tend it gently and attend to meanings

When can the ailing hope to heal

If he meets his doctor hiding his pain?

I did not leave complaining to my patience, but

In my heart is what my tongue cannot express

So show kindness in seclusion, easing souls

With pouring out blame and laments

Perhaps I will be touched by the mercy of union

And saved from the wrath of estrangement
