O eye, pour forth from yourself a copious flood of tears—
with all the force of lamentation, like the water of a running stream.
And weep for your brother; do not forget his noble traits.
And weep for your brother—a brave man, never a coward.
And weep for your brother, for the sake of orphans and a widow.
And weep for your brother, for the guest’s due and the neighbor’s.
His virtues were abundant; his fingertips dripped with generosity.
Like the full moon, he dispelled the dark, never hidden from the night traveler.
Ever returning what was lent, ever freeing a captive woman;
like a valiant lion, crushing every adversary;
a traverser of valleys, a bearer of banners;
open-handed, bountiful, never stingy.
