1. بَكَتْ عَيْني وعاوَدَها قَذاها

    بعوَّارٍ فما تقضي كراها

    My eyes wept and their tears flowed

    With heavy rain, relentless in sorrow’s load

  2. على صَخْرٍ، وأيّ فتًى كصَخْرٍ

    إذا ما النّابُ لم تَرْأمْ طِلاها

    Upon a rock, and what youth compares to rock

    When claws cannot make a scratch or erode

  3. فَتى الفِتْيانِ ما بَلَغوا مَداهُ

    ولا يَكْدَى إذا بلغَتْ كُداها

    The finest of youths, none reached his peak

    Nor would be marred, once reaching its mode

  4. حلفتُ بربِّ صهبٍ معيلاتٍ

    الى البيتِ المحرَّمِ منتهاها

    I swore by the Lord of lofty al-Sahab

    To the sacred house, pilgrimage's abode

  5. لئنْ جزعتْ بنو عمرٍو عليهِ

    لقدْ رزئتْ بنو عمرٍو فتاها

    If Banu 'Amr grieved for him

    Then Banu 'Amr lost a lion untold

  6. لهُ كفٌّ يشدُّ بها وكفٌّ

    تَحَلَّبُ ما يجِفّ ثرَى نَداها

    With one palm he grabs, with another

    He milks, when the dirt of his valley is cold

  7. تَرَى الشُّمّ الجَحاجِحَ من سُلَيْمٍ

    يَبُلّ نَدَى مَدامِعها لِحاها

    You see the women of Sulaym

    Tears flowing like dew, crying aloud

  8. على رجلٍ كريمِ الخيمِ اضحى

    ببطنِ حفيرة ٍ صخبٍ صداها

    For the generous man, praiseworthy and brave

    In the valley of clamor, buried below

  9. ليَبْكِ الخَيرَ صَخراً من مَعَدٍّ

    ذَوو أحلامِها وذوو نُهاها

    Let the virtuous rock of Ma'add weep

    Of withered dreams and glories forego

  10. وخَيْلٍ قدْ لَفَفْتَ بجَوْلِ خَيْلٍ

    فدارتْ بينَ كبشيها رحاها

    And horses you shrouded in steeds’ round

    Spinning amidst them while breathing their woe

  11. ترفَّعَ فضلُ سابغة ٍ دلاصِ

    على خَيْفانَة ٍ خَفِقٍ حَشاها

    Excelling men of many fine traits

    Above the rest, with bounties bestowed

  12. وتسعى حينَ تشتجرُ العوالي

    بكأسِ المَوْتِ ساعَة َ مُصْطَلاها

    Rushing when calamities beset

    With death's cup, in time of need showed

  13. محافظة ً ومحمية ً اذا ما

    نبا بالقومِ منْ جزعٍ لظاها

    Guarding and protecting, when perils neared

    Announcing to the tribe, lest fears erode

  14. فتترُكُها قدِ اضطَرَمَتْ بطَعْنٍ

    تَضَمّنَهُ إذا اخْتَلَفَتْ كُلاها

    Leaving it kindled with raging stabs

    Harboring them when all else corrode

  15. فمَنْ للضّيْفِ إنْ هَبّتْ شَمالٌ

    مزعزعة ٌ تجلوبها صباها

    Who will host the guest when north winds gust

    Shaking the tent stakes that firmly towed?

  16. وألجا بَرْدُها الأشوالَ حُدْباً

    الى الحجراتِ بادية ً كلاها

    Its chill made the she-camels huddle for warmth

    To the rooms, displaying themselves in full show

  17. هنالِكَ لوْ نَزَلْتَ بآلِ صَخْرٍ

    قِرى الأضيافِ شَحْماً من ذراها

    If you stayed with Banu Sahar's line

    Feeding guests is a duty they owed

  18. فلمْ املكْ غداة َ نعيِّ صخرٍ

    سوابقَ عبرة ٍ حلبتْ صراها

    But when Sahar died, I could not control

    Preceding tears that plentifully flowed

  19. أمُطعِمَكُمْ وحامِلَكُمْ ترَكتمْ

    لدى غبراءَ منهدمٍ رجاها

    You left your feeder and transporter

    By an abandoned grave, its glory owed

  20. ليَبْكِ علَيْكَ قوْمُكَ للمَعالي

    وللهَيْجاءِ، إنّكَ ما فَتاها

    Let your people cry for the noble traits

    And virtues in you that flourished and glowed

  21. وقدْ فقدتكَ طلقة ُ فاستراحتْ

    فليتَ الخيلَ فارسها يراها

    With you gone, the mare is relieved

    If only steeds could see their riders abode!
