يا لَهفَ نَفسي عَلى صَخرٍ وَقَد فَزِعَت

خَيلٌ لِخَيلٍ وَأَقرانٌ لِأَقرانِ

O my anxious soul, atop a boulder though you recoiled,

Horse against horse, comrades against comrades.

سَمحٌ إِذا يَسَرَ الأَقوامُ أَقدُحَهُم

طَلقُ اليَدَينِ وَهوبٌ غَيرُ مَنّانِ

Generous is he when the people find ease in his palm,

Free with his hands, impetuous, never one to refuse.

حُلاحِلٌ ماجِدٌ مَحضٌ ضَريبَتُهُ

مِجذامَةٌ لِهَواهُ غَيرُ مِبطانِ

Purebred steed whose charge is glorious,

Unbridled in passion, never to be reined.

سَمحٌ سَجِيَّتُهُ جَزلٌ عَطِيَّتُهُ

وَلِلأَمانَةِ راعٍ غَيرُ خَوّانِ

Generous of temper, bountiful his gifts,

Trustworthy guardian, no betrayer of trust.

نِعمَ الفَتى أَنتَ يَومَ الرَوعِ قَد عَلِموا

كُفءٌ إِذا اِلتَفَّ فُرسانٌ بِفُرسانِ

Excellent lad you are in fraught times, they learned

Equal when riders convened with riders.

سَمحُ الخَلائِقِ مَحمودٌ شَمائِلُهُ

عالي البِناءِ إِذا ما قَصَّرَ الباني

Generous of nature, praised his traits,

Towering edifice though the builder was modest.

مَأوى الأَرامِلِ وَالأَيتامِ إِن سَغِبوا

شَهّادُ أَنجِيَةٍ مِطعامُ ضيفانِ

Refuge of widows and orphans if they are destitute,

Witness to preserves, provider to guest and familiar.

حِلفُ النَدى وَعَقيدُ المَجدِ أَيُّ فَتىً

كَاللَيثِ في الحَربِ لا نِكسٌ وَلا وانِ

Oath of bounty, creed of glory, what gallant

As lion in war, no wavering nor flight.
