The gatherings of youth are now closed,

    How can I rejoice today?

It is she who denied you pleasure,

And left your heart in misery.

If you lived the life of a young man,

You would find her likeness somewhere.

You went back pleased with what you desired,

To see the slave girls angry and sullen.

If you despair of her love,

    And have lost all hope,

Then prepare your mount for departure,

    Blowing freely, never tiring.

She reminded me of a weak companion,

    Like a she-camel limping along.

    To you, Ibn Jafnah complains

    I yearned yet met refusal.

She complained to me but I did not complain to her,

Spreading smiles while my spirit cringed.

Your enemies see you prevail over them

    Assailing them boldly and fiercely,

Like a deadly viper of Salu,

Whose bite strips away the shirt.

When she displays her beauty to eyes,

    The lovesick remembers only torment.
