1. تحنّ إلى الغنى النفس الفقيره

    ولا تدري لعل الفقر خيره

    The poor soul yearns for wealth

    Yet knows not that poverty may be best

  2. لأن المال أول كل همّ

    وإن قرّت به عين قريره

    For money is the root of all worries

    Though it comforts the eye of the affluent

  3. وأن الفقر يومن من حسود

    ومن لصّ يخاتل في ذخيره

    Poverty protects one from the envious

    And thieves who plot to steal his provisions

  4. وما الشيطان يدنو من فقير

    ولا السلطان يكسب من جريره

    Neither devil nor sultan approaches a pauper

    Nor would they profit from tormenting him

  5. وكم من تالف بالمال قتلا

    وتعذيبا على كشف السريره

    Many who flaunted wealth were killed

    Or tortured to reveal their secrets

  6. تطيّر معشرٌ بالفقر جهلا

    ومال متلف للنفس طيره

    Some foolishly scorn poverty

    Yet wealth often ruins one's soul

  7. فلا فقر يهذب قلب حر

    ولا شغل بأموال كثيره

    Neither does poverty refine a free heart

    Nor assets in plenty bring peace of mind

  8. وأشقى الناس في الدنيا كريم

    يذلّ لمبغضيه على بصيره

    The most wretched in this life is a noble man

    Who humbles himself before his foes aware
