    —scrutinizing its every state.

  2. By Indian arithmetic I made—

    —a reckoning that exposed the utmost of its cunning.

  3. I calculated it, and found it

    to be Aldebaran in the degree of its equipoise.

  4. I saw that it was unlike the five—

    —planets in the very nature of its qualities.

  5. Its auspicious fortune was unlike the fortunate—

    —stars, while its malign influence was the least of its effects.

  6. I precisely charted its course

    and its station, through to the outcome of its setting.

  7. Then I saw that happiness—

    —had never so much as crossed its mind.

  8. Its paths escaped the ken of created—

    —beings of old, though bent on apprehending it.

  9. Thus from its deeds a name was coined for me—

    —a name tinged with its infirmity.

  10. And I found my lot to be its lot,

    in its peace and in the blaze of its battle.

  11. The House of Life stands marked,

    dependent on where its delays will end.

  12. And the House of my Wealth has a course

    that never once singled me out with its riches.

  13. And among the signs is this:

    my star—I was fashioned in its likeness—

  14. crookedness, and a letter perfectly wrought;

    yet I cannot rise above its ravaging madness.

  15. And all my striving after livelihood—

    —among all the stars, together with its omen—

  16. is scant in yield: it never—

    —moistens the palate of my mouth with the dew of its bounty.

  17. Its estrangement is all the same to me,

    whether in its remoteness or in conjunction.
