1. Indeed, the astrologer sets forth at dawn,

    with want amid his gear.

  2. You see him there with his astrolabe,

    his calculations, and his finery.

  3. His almanac is the axis on which he turns,

    while poverty dwells within his very bones.

  4. And when he sets himself to seek—

    —ing the propitious hour in eager haste,

  5. fear then inhabits his garments,

    and want is the stuffing of his bed.

  6. He shuns a companion, for that companion

    is, in truth, the ruin of his livelihood.
