لا يخدعنّك لفظ طاب ظاهرهُ

من قائل بتّ مسروراً بظاهره

Let not the sweet words a speaker says

Deceive you, though his face beams with delight;

انظر إلى عينهِ بالحسنِ مختبراً

صدق الذي ظل يخفي في ضمائرهِ

Look in his eyes to test his fair display,

Truth keeps hid what the heart doth slight.

لا تكذبُ العينُ عمّا في سرائرهِ

ويكذب اللفظ عمّا في سرائره

The eyes lie not about what's in his mind

While words may lie about what's in his mind
