قالوا تعشّق فافتقر

ويلي بمنحول النظر

They said you fell in love and became poor

Woe to me with my crossed eyes

فإذا تتايه معرضا

ضحك القضاء إلى القدر

So when you get lost in thought

Fate laughs at destiny

وإذا أراد الله أن

يقضي بأمر مستطر

And when God wants

To rule on a pressing matter

عميَ الفؤاد فما يرى

ولربّما عميَ البصر

The heart is blinded so it cannot see

And sometimes vision itself is blinded

ثم انثنيت إليهم

متمثلا لمن اعتبر

Then I turned back to them

Quoting one who might take heed

فأجبتهم لا تعجلوا

سقط الذبابُ على الدبر

And I replied: Do not be hasty

Flies fall on what is rotten
