الورد يحسن في أوائل ورده

ويهون في أيدي الصغار إذا اتّسع

The rose looks best when first in bloom

And loses value in children’s hands when plucked

وأجلّ منه نضارة في حسنه

ورد الخدود إذا على الخجل امتقع

More splendid than it is the blush of bashfulness

The cheek’s rose when it deepens over modesty

هذا يذلّ لرخصه فتناله

أيدي الرّذال بما يهون من القطع

The cheap is grasped by common hands

Because it has been debased and plucked

وخدودُ ربّات الحجال مميّز

يغلو لعزّته على أهل الورع

But the cheeks of the veiled ladies are distinguished

Highly prized by the virtuous for their honor
