صحبت الدهر في بوبي فقير

فنوع في المعيشة بالمباح

I have lived a lifetime in poverty

Subsisting on the barest necessities

فما شاهدت غير مصادقات

وحاجات وعادات اصطلاح

I've seen naught but false friendships

Self-interest, empty manners and pretense

وموت معمّر وحياة طفل

وشمس في المغيب وفي الصباح

The death of the aged, the life of a babe

The rising and setting of the sun

ودجلة والفرات ونيل مصر

وحزر بعد مدّ مستباح

The Tigris, Euphrates and Nile of Egypt

And waves beyond count crash ashore

وارض تستقرّ وطود رضوى

وأجبال موثقة فساح

The earth settles, soft dunes repose

As mountains stand anchored and vast

فلم أر شافعا أقوى وأشفى

من البيض المدورة الصحاح

No intercessor have I found more powerful

Than round white bread, freshly baked

وأبناء الصحاح مكسّرات

وأنصاف وأرباع ملاح

Loaves split open, halves and quarters stacked

My Lord, grant me this bread in plenty

فيا رب اعطني منها كثيرا

حلالا في الغدو وفي الرواح

At dawn and dusk, my lawful right

So I need not beg, until my numbered days are up

لستغني بها عن بذل وجهي

إلى يومي من الأجل المتاح
