كل قبل أن يأكلك الدود

وأنت في الحفرة ملحود

Before the worms devour you

As you lie confined in a grave

صلّ وصم لله واشكر له

فالله محمود ومعبود

Pray and fast for Allah, thank Him

For Allah is praised and worshipped

وما أتاك الله من فضله

فأنعم به والشخص موجود

And whatever bounty Allah gave you

Be generous with it while you exist

كم قد رأت عيناك من باخل

يجمعُ مالا وهو محسود

How many misers have your eyes seen

Amassing money while envied

صار إلى القبر وأيامه

حيّا وميتا كلّها سود

They reached their graves, their days

Alive or dead all turned to black

وخلّف المال على وارث

وجسمه في اللحد ممدود

Left behind wealth for an heir

His body stretched out in a niche

قد فارق الدنيا على حسرةٍ

وهو غدا في الحشر مجهود

He left the world feeling regret

Tomorrow at Resurrection fatigued

وعن قليل منه لا يفتدي

رهن البلى والباب مسدود

And for a pittance he cannot ransom

Held by decay with the door shut

فاسمح وكل ما دمت حيّا فما

عليك هذا العمرُ مردود

So be gentle and as long as you live

This lifetime cannot be restored
