سندانةٌ من عملِ الفخّار
أحكمها صانعها بالنار
A lidded clay vessel, the potter’s handiwork,
Its maker hardened it in the fire.
غطاؤُها جاء على مقدار
كأنما قد خطّ بالبركار
Its lid was fashioned to exact measure,
As though it had been traced with a compass.
منطقُها في الوسط كالزنار
خوف الزنانير وخوف الفار
Its band about the middle is like a girdle,
For fear of cats—and fear of mice.
