1. Time has left me all alone—and every freeborn man,

    noble, possessed of understanding and discernment,

  2. finds himself fearing the peril of consorting

    with one whose company brings reproach and shame.

  3. So I eat whatever I desire, without objection,

    and no one objects to it with a look of distaste.

  4. And I drink from little goblets, to my soul’s delight;

    amid merriment, the little goblets please me.

  5. And I have a goblet that I call a tighār,

    and the tighār resembles it in shape.

  6. So I drink from the tighār and pay no heed

    once I have had my fill of what the wine-seller made.
