ضرير أحنف شيخٌ كبيرٌ

وحيدٌ مفردٌ وجعٌ غريب

A one-eyed elder, frail and alone

Bereft of all but strange affliction's bone

فقير والفقير حليف ضرّ

ذليلٌ إن ذا خبرٌ عجيب

The poor know naught but scarcity and dearth

And I, though weak, have tales of wondrous worth

لقد صبّ البلاد عليّ صبا

فليسَ لما بليتُ به طبيب

Much has rained down on me in this hard land

Yet no physician can my hurts withstand
