1. O Abū Hāshim, son of al-Marzubān—and whoever is called upon

    must answer, or the wayward verses will give him no peace:

  2. scurrilous lampoons, whenever they are let fly

    by the crooked-footed man whom promises have kept awake.

  3. If no good or hospitality can be hoped for from you,

    if you benefit no one and no one envies you,

  4. then you are like one cast away, with no good in him;

    you and a thing God never created are one and the same.

  5. The complainant has given you fair warning; if you make amends,

    you will have my thanks; otherwise, the odes will keep you company.
