O Lord, where is Your abundant bounty,

    Your accustomed largesse and grace?

Your servants have become—though You provide for them,

and Yours is majesty, and Your judgment is just—

stricken for lack of sustenance; they have no

watering place but You: drought has befallen them.

Laid low at Your door, they ask You to grant them

relief—and You are worthy to grant what they ask.

The child complains to You of his destitution,

and to You the mature man complains of his hunger.

He hopes in You, and hopes in none but You, for that

in which judgment and reason have gone astray.

So lift, through Your bounty, the affliction of our want,

and be forbearing, though ignorance has brought us low.
