أقضى عليّ من الأجل

عذل العذول إذا عذل

Deadlier to me than my appointed end

is the faultfinder’s reproach, whenever he reproaches.

وأشدّ من عذل العذو

ل صدود إلف قد وصل

And harsher to me than the faultfinder’s reproach

is the turning-away of one who once drew close.

وأشدّ من هذا وذا

طلب النوال من السفل

And harsher to me than this and that

is asking the base for largesse.
