The world has not been made sweet by food and comfort,
nor by drink, indulgence, clothing, or companionship.
I sought a companion or a friend, but found none—
no new one; nor did a well-worn one pass muster.
Many a companion have I—may God set his dwelling far away—
base, lowly, low-born on both sides, contemptible.
So here I am, my patience held captive by grief,
and the patience of a free and noble man worn threadbare.
