أطفأت نار المنى بباسي

ونلت مالي بلا إمكاسِ

By consoling myself, I quenched the fire of favors held over me.

And obtained what was mine after haggling.

صاحبتُ دهري بلا اعتراضِ

وغير حرصٍ ولا اختلاس

I kept company with Time without protest,

without greed or furtive taking.

ولم أذم البخيل لمّا

شحّ فألوى ولم يُواس

Nor did I blame the miser when

he withheld, turned away, and offered no aid.

أرحت قلبي وعشت وحدي

بلا اختلاط ولا مساس

I put my heart at ease and lived alone,

without mingling or contact.
