I asked Ibn Raḥmah how he fared—

    a question bitterer than colocynth.

I said to him, “You have grown old, yet

no flowing hair hangs from your cheeks.

Why do I see the growth upon your cheeks

still as it was when first it sprouted?”

    He replied—and spoke finely:

“The bane of crops is the sickle.”

And he brought the phrase he uttered to perfection,

like an arrow aimed at the mortal spot:

“So does growth fare upon a cheek

when it remains there and does not cease.

If the upper shoots of the boughs wither,

then the decay comes from below.”
