Whenever something fine appears to you in a friend,

accept it—take the finest in him.

    Never ask what hearts conceal,

for you have no need of asking.

You will never find a fair-minded companion

    whose end resembles his beginning.

A poet once said, long ago—

he saw the right course in prudence and practiced it:

Eat the greens, from wherever they are brought to you,

and never ask about the garden patch.
