ليالي الصبا درت عليك السحائب

وجادك هطال مرته الجنائب

The clouds of youth have rained upon you,

And the southern winds blew generously upon you.

فقد كنت مرعى للشباب ومرتعا

إذا جف منه جانب طاب جانب

You were once a pasture for youth and a meadow,

When one side dries up, the other flourishes.

إذا ضحكت أيامك البيض ناشئا

غريرا بكاك المعلقون الأشايب

When your bright days smile in their prime,

The elders lament while the youths rejoice.

إذا كسب الشيب الوقار فإنه

يذمك بالشيب الحسان الكواعب

When old age earns dignity, it then

Blames you for youth, O charmer of hearts!

وفي طيّ هذا الدهر كل عجيبة

فمن عاش لافته النهى والعجائب

In the fold of time, every wonder occurs,

So whoever lives sees prohibitions and wonders,

وبصّره بالفكر ما كان عله

عليه الهوى والمشكلات الغرائب

And reason reveals to him what was its cause;

Passion and perplexing wonders.

وإني بحمد الله أنظر عن مدى

بعيد أنثني للخير والخير عازب

And I, praise God, look from afar

To walk the path of good though good is absent,

فإن غالني صرف الزمان وريبه

وأعوزني فيه خليل مقارب

If the course of time deceives me,

And I lack in it an intimate, close friend,

ليست له الصبر الجميل على جوى

تشيب له في المعضلات الذوائب

Who has no beautiful patience for passion

That makes perplexities white for him,

وجاورت من لا يعدم الخير جارهُ

ولا راجيا إحسانه منه خائب

And I resided with one whose neighbor is never devoid of good,

Nor hoping for his benevolence to be disappointed,

وقلت له والصبر أكبر جنّة

إذا بهرج القول الخؤون المكاذب

And I said to him: Patience is the greatest treasure

When disturbed speech deceives with sorrows.

ألا أيها الإنسان والسيد الذي

برغم العدا شدّت إليه الركائب

O man! O master whom despite enemies

Ships set sail towards!

أبا مسلم إن الإمارة خيّرت

قرينا كريما يتقي ويراقب

Abu Muslim, authority has chosen

An honorable companion who fears and observes.

قرنت بمحمود السجايا محمّدا

حسيب أديب كاتب وهو حاسب

It matched with Mahmoud's virutes Muhammad

A cultured writer, and he is an accountant.

محاسنه اشتقت وكان اشتياقها

من اسم أبيه سؤدد وهو ناسب

Its virtues originated from his father's name Su'dud, which is fitting.

If glory were asked to choose the best companion,

ولو قيل للمجد اقترع خير صاحب

للاذ به مستعصم وهو راغب

Al-Mu'tasim would take him, and he is willing.

If vocalized, glory would say through its mouth,

ولو نطق المجد المؤثل عن فم

لقال به اسطو وعنه اضارب

It lauds him as Ashtar and takes pride in him.

So at all times, from his mighty status,

ففي كل وقت من جلالة قدره

له مادح عن جوده ومخاطب

A praiser of his generosity can be found addressing him.

His manners are like the dew's fresh light,

خلائقه كالنور باكرهُ الندى

وجادت عليه بالعشيّ السحائب

And the clouds gratuitously poured on him at night.

Like an endless sword that bends to the touch,

وكالسيف متناه تلين للامس

وحدّاه فيها الموت والموت قاضب

Death in it whetted its edge that reaps lives.

Like the shining sun and the radiant moon at dawn

وكالشمس والبدر المضيئة في الضحى

إذا ازدحمت في جانبيه المواكب

When processions crowded on its sides.

He saw resolve for the Exalted in his determination,

رأى الحرم في إمضائه العزم للعلى

فأمضاهما بالرأي والرأي ثاقب

So he determined them with opinion and discerning opinion.

With the victorious crowned King, his might

وبالملك التاج المؤيّد عزّه

منوطٌ بعزّ أسعتده الكواكب

Is linked to the might of the stars that assisted him.

So this kingdom remains lofty in its branches

فلا زال هذا الملك تعلو فروعهُ

إلى النسر والعيوق والأصل راسب

To the eagle, the swooping bird, and the firm root.

The world is pleasant and its bliss is pleasant,

فقد طابت الدنيا وطاب نعيمها

فمن كان فيها زاهدا فهو راغب

So whoever decried it, now desires it.

Safe security, faithful victory, chastity,

أمان أمين وانتصار وعفة

وبسط وعدل شامل ومواهب

Expanse, justice, all-encompassing grace.

God has secured the countries, so they woke up

فقد آمن الله البلاد فأصبحت

ذئاب الفلا ترعى الكلا والأرانب

With wolves grazing mint and rabbits.

O teacher! The praise of a praiser

ألا أيها الأستاذ دعوة مادح

رأى المدح فرضا واجبا وهو واجب

Deemed praise an obligation, and it is an obligation.

Uqayra’s outskirts and plains have flourished

عمرت ضواحي عكيرا وعراصها

يعدل رئيس هذبته التحارب

With the refinement of its judicious ruler.

With chastity, justice, victory, and power!

عفافا وعدلا وانتصارا وسطوة

ألا يأبي الله تلك الضرائب

Would God refuse such tributes?

I shepherded the subjects' affairs compassionately,

وراعيت أحوال الرعيّة مشفقا

فدرت عليهم بالنقيّ المكاسب

So pure gains flowed unto them.

I brought them close as if you were their father,

وقرّبتهم حتى كأنك والد

فحلمك موجود وكيسك غالب

Your wisdom ever-present and your understanding prevailing.

Live safely, fearing, hoping, and pious,

فعش سالما تخشى وترجى وتتّقى

برغم العدى ما دام للدر حالب

Despite the enemies, as long as the pearl has luster.

I do not tire of composing and versifying,

وما كنت أعيا للقريض ونظمه

فمنها إذن سدّت عليّ المذاهب

So these pursuits have barred other interests.

For eighty years you left me, and I remained

ثمانون عاما أخلفتني ولم أزل

جليداً إذا ما صافحتني النوائب

Rigid when tribulations greeted me.

I became like something discarded after I stood up

فأصبحت كالشيء اللقى بعد نهضتي

إلى معجر قد غيبته الغياهب

To a dune the obscurities had concealed.

I praised you by choice and aspired to honor,

مدحتك مختاراً ورمت تشرفا

وإنيَ من مدحي سواك لتائب

And I now repent praising anyone but you.
