1. ويفرح يوم العيد من فيه متعة

    ومستمتع في ملكه المال والوفر

    Joyous on feast days are those who find pleasure,

    And he who revels in his wealth and abundance.

  2. فتى ضحكت أيامه وزمانه

    إليه وأعداه على عسره الدهر

    A youth whose days laughed and whose times

    Brought him ease and lifted him from the hardship of fate.

  3. فلا تسألوني كيف عيدي فإنني

    رأيت الرقيق الحال ليس له قدر

    Ask me not how my feast day is, for I

    Saw the frail state that has no worth.

  4. سلوا الحال عن عيدي ولا تسلونها

    لسان الفتى بالعسر أسكته الفقر

    Ask the state about my feast day, and ask it not,

    For the tongue of the youth in hardship is silenced by poverty.

  5. غريب وحيد أحنف شاب رأسه

    وصاحبه فقر فصارمه اليسر

    A lonesome, lonely, poor young man, his head bowed,

    And his companion poverty, so fortune has hardened against him.
