1. ألا ذرفت عيني ودام سجومها

    وأفقدها طيب المنام منيمها

    Oh, my eyes overflowed with tears continuously

    And sleep left them, taking away their comfort

  2. وكانت على الأيّام عيني صحيحةً

    فها هي قرحى لا تداوى كلومُها

    My eyes used to be healthy looking at the days

    Yet now they are ulcered, incurable are their wounds

  3. لقد أقرحَ الأجفان دمع كأنّه

    شآبيب سحب أسكبتها غيومها

    Tears have ulcered my eyelids as if

    They were rain clouds that poured out their showers

  4. إذا ديمةٌ منها استقلّت وأمطرَت

    نأت فهمت أخرى طباقا ركومها

    When some tears finish and rain down

    Others understand and flow down again in succession

  5. على أن في سفح الدموع استراحة

    لغيري وقلبي دائما لا يرومها

    Yet in the slopes of tears there is some comfort

    For others while my heart never wishes for it

  6. ألا يا خليلي من قشير أما ترى

    إلى مهجتي تفنى ويبلى أديما

    Oh my friend, is it not true that my body wastes away

    And the sands of my days come to their end?

  7. وما مسعد عندي ويبكي أخا جوى

    له مقلة أدوى الصحيح سقيمها

    While Mis'ad weeps for a brother departed

    Whose sickness I try to cure, but cannot heal

  8. جرى دمعي منها ارتياحا وصبوة

    إلى حمص يستدعيه منها نعيمها

    My tears flow relieved, abundantly

    To Homs where pleasure calls them

  9. ويرتاح قلبي نحو بغداذ للهوى

    لشتّان إذ ضمّ الحبيب حريمها

    And my heart finds comfort in Baghdad's love

    How different when the beloved unites his harem!

  10. وإنّي لأستهدي الشمال سلامهُم

    وينعشُ قلبي حين يأتي نسيمها

    I ask the North wind for news of them

    And my heart is glad when a breeze comes from there

  11. لقد أفسدَ العيش التنائي وقد سطا

    على مهجتي حتفا وخسفا يسومها

    Being apart has ruined life, and it dominated

    My heart with death and collapse that it planned

  12. أما والتي في القلب أيسرُ حبّها

    لظى جمرات ليس يخبو ضريمُها

    By her who is the tenderest love in my heart

    It kindled ember fires that do not conceal their heat

  13. لأدرعَنّ الليل سيرا تجوب بي

    فسيح الفلا نوق بلى الوخد كومها

    I will walk the night traveling far

    In the open desert, kissing the cheek of sand dunes

  14. بوازل يقطعن الصحاصح بالضحى

    تحفّ بحار البيد حتى أعومها

    In the morning, stopping at the small dunes

    That echo with the sound, echoing voices

  15. إذا جبت منها بلقعا لاح بلقع

    يجيب الصدى فيها صدى الصوت بومها

    When I hear them, I forget all

    Except the one whose voice puts me to sleep

  16. إذا أذني استهدت بها صوت صائت

    تناسيت إلا من صداها ينيمها

    When we passed al-Baqee' in peace

    And passed al-Barma, how excellent are its sands!

  17. إذا أنّا جاوزت البقيعة سالما

    وجاوزت بارمّا فنعمى أرومها

    When we crossed the Euphrates bridge at dawn

    And arrived at Ajseer, its sands appeared

  18. وجاوزت جسر النهروان مشرّقا

    ووافيت باجسري ولاحت حجومها

    And we camped on land secured by God, who gave

    Its people abundance, fertility and fair shares

  19. وخيّمت أرضا آمن الله أهلها

    وأوسعها خصبا وعدلا قسيمها

    Afterwards, I thanked the One for whom I yearned

    He whose care enriches me and sustains me absolutely

  20. فشكرت أما بعد شوقا إلى امرىء

    له راحة أغنى وأقنى عمومُها

    To you, son of Waraqa, the Prince, I complained

    Of the land the Prophet made barren and desolate

  21. إليك ابن ورقاء الأمير تهجّست

    بي النيب أرضا قد قلاها ظليمها

    Roamed by few wild animals, misguided

    Eating my flesh, stinging me with their venom

  22. قليلة مرعى الوحش مرت مضلة

    ويأكل لحمي حرّها وسمومها

    Traveling the lands, it destroyed them

    With a disheveled one, narrowing its expanses

  23. تجوب قراديد البلاد وهدها

    بأشعث ذي أماكاها مضيمها

    So I can witness your noble character

    Noble, and your ancestry is my asset

  24. لأشهدَ من أخلاقك الغرّ مشهداً

    كريما وحسبي من جداها مريمها

    God has filled the lands with safety

    Through your sword when there was little security

  25. لقد ملأ الله البلاد سلامة

    بسيفك لما قلّ فيها سليمها

    And made the wolf and lamb flock together

    To you despite the jealous chiefs

  26. وألفت بين الذئب والشاء فانضوى

    إليك برغم الحاسدين زعيمها

    The demons of the land dread and fear you

    And refrain from eating the unlawful

  27. ودانت شياطين البلاد مهابة

    وقصّر عن أكل الحرام رجيمها

    Men fear men dearer to them

    Who before they would not hesitate to insult

  28. وخافت رجال من رجال أعزّة

    ومن قبل كانت لا يضام ذميمها

    The Bedouins of the land answered your call

    And the Kurds of the land obeyed your command

  29. أجابك أعراب البلاد وأذعنت

    لأمرك أكراد البلاد ورومها

    So its snakes slept and its lions calmed

    And the poor and orphan lived in it

  30. فنامت أفاعيها وريضت أسودها

    وعاش بها مسكينها ويتيمهها

    The necks of tyrannical kings bowed down

    To you who built glory there, elders and youth alike

  31. وذلّت رقاب من ملوك جبابر

    بنى المجد فيها كهلها وفطيمها

    The noble old men took pride and they are truly

    The noblest of people, and you are their noble one

  32. فخرت بشيبان الكرام وإنها

    كرام الورى حقا وأنت كريمها

    You disciplined its undisciplined, its brave lion, its leader

    You put it forward in every important matter, its most knowledgeable one

  33. مهذّبها قمقامها ليث غابها

    مقدّمها في كلّ خطب عليمها

    You are the sword of God in all the earth

    Its later ones praiseworthy and its early ones

  34. وشيبان سيف الله في الأرض كلها

    أواخرها محمودة وقديمها

    And you are of the noble old men, with a high

    And famous character and sweet calmness

  35. وحوط فمن شيبان في راس شامخ

    مناقبها مشهورة وحلومها

    You stretch out your hand to the heights, whenever you draw

    A sword, the next day the coward has no peer

  36. مددت إلى العلياء كفا إذا امتطت

    حساما غداة الروع فل خصيمها

    Through it a drink is wholesome and fresh for the taster

    And my misery and joy are its prose and poetry

  37. بها منهلا شري وأري لذائق

    وبؤسى ونعمى نثرها ونظيمها

    Oh Ja'far, son of the noble ones, truly

    Only the greatest men bear the burdens of men

  38. فيا جعفرا يا ابن الكرام وإنما

    ينوء بأثقال الرجال عظيمها
