أكرمت سنّوري وأحببته

مخافة الفأر المقاذير

I honored my cat and loved him,

Fearing the filthy mouse,

فعابني قومق على حبّه

كحبّ ربّات المقاصير

So people blamed me for loving him,

Like ladies loving their kittens.

فقلت للعائب في حبّه

قول عليم بالمعاذير

So I said to those blaming my love,

Speak wisely with excuses.

قلّة إنصاف بني آدم

علمني حبّ السنانير

The lack of fairness of Adam's sons,

Taught me to love cats.
