إذا ملك الفتى هنّا ودنّا

ومقردة وملفسة وصن

If a youth has here a tent and furnishing,

A pipe and striped cloak and turban too,

وجبّرة وغربالا إذا ما

رآه عدّوّه يوما يحن

A pitcher and a sieve when enemies see,

Some day he'll grieve and mourn for you,

وكارجة من البرق اليماني

قطينية وكان له مسن

With Yemen bow so bright and strong,

A coat of mail and good keen brand,

ولاح على ذراعيه سطور

وسبعا غابة والكركدن

Bracelets engraved upon his arms,

A wolf pack and a vulture land,

وكان له محاشيّ مليح

خلاسيّ إذا ما حزّ رن

And handsome pages dressed so fair

Who turn whene’er he gives command,

وأمشى خلفه كلبا هروشا

له ذات نعوس به وسن

A hound that snaps at all who pass,

With teeth protruding from his mouth,

يلايق في العبارة والمعاني

ويأتي الدرّ يحويه من

Then he deserves in word and deed

The shining pearls that he can stand.
