حسبي ضجرت من الأدب

ورأيته سببَ العطب

I'm tired of literature,

And have seen it cause distress.

وهجَرت إعراب الكلا

م وما حفظت من الخطب

I've abandoned grammar,

And don't remember any speeches.

ونسيت أخبار الزب

ير وما رواه من النسب

I've forgotten the tales of past,

And the genealogies they recount.

وتركت تفسير المعا

ني وهو ديوان العرب

I've left interpreting meanings,

The hallmark of Arabs.

ورهنت ديوان النقا

ئض واسترحت من التعب

I've pawned the book of eloquence,

And rested from exhaustion.

لا تعجبي يا هند من

قولي فما فيه عجب

Don't be surprised, Hindi,

By what I say.

إن الزمان بمن تقدم

في النباهة منقلب

Time has reversed

The wise who came before.

والجهل يضطهد الححى

والراس يعلوه الذنب

Ignorance persecutes the virtuous,

And sin sits atop the head.
