  1. من ذا يكون مجيري من بني زمنٍ

    قد صيّروني وإن قاربتهم هدفا

    Who will be my protector from a people

    Who made me a target though I drew near to them

  2. أشكو إلى الله ما ألقاه من نفَرٍ

    يرونَ علمي إذا ذاكرتهم خرفا

    I complain to God of the hostility I faced

    They see my knowledge as senility when I speak of it

  3. إن قلت قولا حكيما قال قائلهم

    لقمان صيّرهُ من بعده خلفا

    If I say a wise saying, they say its speaker

    Made Luqman his successor after him

  4. متى تمثلت عن فهم وفلسفَةٍ

    سبّوا أبقراط من جهل وما وصفا

    Whenever I reflect with wisdom and philosophy

    They insult Hippocrates out of ignorance without describing him

  5. أو فهت عن أدب أو ذكر مكرمة

    سبّوا ابن قيس وسبّوا الشعر والحنفا

    Or when I understand literature or mention an honor

    They insult Ibn Qays and insult poetry and meter

  6. متى تبرّأت من عيب ومن دنسٍ

    قالوا تتايه أو أبدى لنا صلفا

    Whenever I shun a fault or impurity

    They say I'm lost or I'm showing arrogance

  7. وإن بدت نعمة لله سابغة

    أو أبصروا من صنيع الله لي طرفا

    And if I see a complete blessing from God

    Or they see a glimpse of God's work for me

  8. استجلبوا لي عيبا وانثنوا حسداً

    يبدون شيني ولا يألونني أسفا

    They ascribe a fault to me and are envious

    Revealing my disgrace but not pitying me

  9. لا البعد منهم يراعوه ولا صلتي

    لهم تخلصّني من سب من هتفا

    Neither distance from them nor my connection

    Delivers me from the insults of those who yell

  10. ودي من الناس أنجو سالما وهمُ

    عابوا الأكابر والأشراف والسلفا

    I wish safety from people while they

    Criticized the great, the noble, and the ancestors

  11. لا يبعد الله قوما كنت بينهم

    من سالف الدهر سنّوا الفضل والشرفا

    God does not distance a people from whom I was

    Among the elite of times gone by, of virtue and nobility

  12. إذا رأوا هفوة غضّوا جفونهم

    وإن رأوا زلة لم ينطقوا أنفا

    When they see a slip, they lower their gazes

    And when they see a stumble, they do not speak of it

  13. وإن رأوا حسنا أبدوه وابتهجوا

    إخوان صدق لمن أخلاقهم عرفا

    And when they see good, they mention it and rejoice

    Brothers of truthfulness, their character is known

  14. هذا زمان لقوم صرت بينهم

    لم ألق بدراً فإن لاقيته كسفا

    This is an era of people among whom I am

    Not encountering excellence, rather eclipses if I meet it
