ويفتح لي بالشيء أهوى وأشتهي

مواساة جاري والجوار وكيد

He opens for me what I love and desire

The consolation of my neighbor and plotting

ويمنعني أن يسط الجار عادة

وليس لمعروف المقل مزيد

And prevents me when the neighbor spreads habit

And the few kind acts have no increase

ويقبضني عن عادة الخير غيره

كما قال غيري وافطام جهيد

And he holds me back from the habit of kindness from others

As others have said, and weaning of effort

وإن زمانا يمنع الحر خيره

عن الناس من خوف الأذى لشديد

And if an era prevents the free man his good

From people, from fear of harm most severe
