أخيب خلق الله مستنكح

في فقره من رجل مكثر

How disappointed is the character of one who exults

In his poverty over a man of means,

وخاملٌ ذو نسب خامل

عاب شريفا حسن المنظر

And is heedless, though of noble lineage,

Censuring a noble man of handsome appearance.

بينهما أخيب من فعله

مديرة زفّت إلى مدبر

Between the two, more disappointing in his conduct

Is she who is led in marriage to one she dislikes.
