1. أين الفرار من المنيّة أين لي

    لا أين وهي قلائدُ الأعناق

    Where can I escape from death, where can I flee

    No escape, for it adorns all necks like necklaces

  2. أنّي توجّه هارب من ريبها

    كانت له كالعقائد الأعناق

    Though I tried to escape from its grip

    It clung to me like necklaces cling to necks

  3. لا الطفل يسلم من سهام قسيّها

    والشيخ تزعجه على إرهاق

    Neither the child is safe from its cruel arrows

    Nor the old who it tires in their fatigue

  4. هي مورد الإنسان مصدر ريها

    حدث يسوق به أشد ّسياق

    It is the destination of man and source of its watering

    An event that flows with the strongest currents

  5. ما بين ما تلقاه حيّا ناطقا

    متردّيا بمكارم الأخلاق

    From what he receives alive and talking

    Arrogant in virtues and morals

  6. حتى تراه بها زميل مطيّة

    خشبيّة الأنساب والأعراق

    Until you see him as death’s partner

    Wooden in lineage and veins

  7. سلس القياد يطيع كل ممارس

    لا يستطيع دفاع ما هو لاق

    With smooth reins obeying every rider

    Unable to deflect what fate has decreed
