I hoard my money and refrain from it
For my money is my sword and shield
And I withhold as much as I can in my life
From myself of what I eat and wear
And I leave it to my worst enemy
When I die, without a son or wedding
He eats it and drinks it merrily
To musical tones of flute and drum
And he sings over my grave
Without giving alms on my behalf
I prefer that to saying to a friend
Benefit from five coins of it
So the reward of the tail is lost from me
And my soul became like a dog’s soul
Before that death with good fortune
I prefer poverty to a decorated box
Because poverty is the ugliest thing
That has befallen man of clothes and dress
And it is uglier than mange in every land
Even if they trace lineage to Abd Shams
