وقالوا الخمر قلت لهم حرام

على نصّ الشريعة والمثاني

They said wine is forbidden

Clearly in Islamic law and tradition

وقلت لهم كتاب الله بيني

وبينكم وتفسير القران

I said the Book of God is between us

And explains the Quran

فإن كان الكتاب أبان هذا

بتحريم صريح أو بيان

If the Book clearly prohibits this

Or clarifies with explanation

وإلا فارتحلنا من بلاد

إلى الأخرى من خوف القناني

Otherwise we'll move from these lands

For fear of the authorities

وإن تك بنت كرم ذات قدم

تزيد من العجائب والبهان

If you are a noble woman of virtue

Increasing wonders and proofs

فلست بزاهد في مثل هذا

قوافيه شكونا في المكان

I'm no ascetic toward the likes of this

Its rhymes are our complaint in this place

أحرّم ما يصحّ به مزاجي

وينفي الهمّ عن قلب مهان

I make lawful what agrees with my nature

And takes away cares from a despised heart

فإن كفّوا كففت وإن أعادوا

شربت الخمر من حلب الأواني

If they desist I'll desist, if they persist

I'll drink wine from the vessels of Aleppo

على ما سطر النعمان فيها

مسحا أو على شرط بيان

Based on what al-Nu'man wrote of it

As a wiping or under the terms he laid down
