لمت الغواني في العدو

ل إلى الشباب ملام عاذل

I blamed the singing girls for hating men,

And scolded the youth for blaming the reproachers.

وأريتهنّ الفضل في

وصل الأشايب بالدلائل

I showed them the merit in joining

The elderly with evidence.

وقصدت صاحبتي التي

نظرت إليّ بعين باخل

I approached my companion who

Glanced at me with a squinting eye.

ذكرتها العهد القدي

م على الغدايا والأصائل

I reminded her of the old covenant

Regarding the favors and kind acts.

قالت وصلتك ناشئا

وقناع رأسك غير حائل

She said: Your friendship started

When your turban was not yet a veil.

وتمثلت بالورد في

أيام مقدمه الأوائل

And you impersonated the rose during

The first days of its arrival.

والورد يجعل في الأنو

ف وفي المحاسد والغلائل

The rose is made for nostrils

And envious and hateful ones.

وإذا أفاض إلى الذبو

ل ذوى فألقيَ في المزابل

And when it fades and wilts,

It is discarded in the trash.
