من أراد المل والرا
حة من همّ طويل
Whoever desires wealth and comfort
Free from endless worry and gloom
فليكن فردا من النا
س ويرضى بالقليل
Must be detached from other men
And satisfied with little gain
ويرى أن قليلا
نافعا غير قليل
Deeming little that is useful
More than a lot of little worth
ويرى بالحزم أن ال
حزم في ترك الفضول
And prudent to abandon all excess
To cure the illness of loneliness
ويداوي مرضَ الوح
دة بالصبر الجميل
With patience fair and fine
He contends not, no matter who assails
لا يماري أحدا ما
عاش في قال وقيل
But keeps his silence, for it is said
The silent are prudent and wise
يلزم الصمت فإن
الصم تهذيب العقول
Mentioning others' virtues, he's pleased
Though he himself is held in scorn
يذكر الفضل لأهلي
ه ويرضى بالخمول
What life for a man constantly
Debased and humbled?
أي عيش لامرىء يص
بح في حال ذيل
Between the aims of enemies
And flattery from foolish men
بين قصد من عدو
ومداراة جهول
The plaints of friends,
Estrangement from the indolent
واعتلال من صديق
وتجنّ من ملول
Consorting with the hateful
Bearing the wearisome with pain
ومماشاة بغيض
ومقاساة ثقيل
Guarding against suspicions and slights
From the rash and insolent
واحتراس من ظنون
السوء أو عذل عذول
Alas! To know men in every way
Yet never meet a noble soul
أفّ من معرفة النا
س على كل سبيل
When you perfect all this
You will rule a glorious kingdom
وتمام الأمر لا تع
رف سمحا من بخيل
فإذا أكمل هذا
كان في ملك جليل
