إني اعتللت فلم أجد لي عائدا

من بين معرفة ولا لوّاذ

I fell ill, and found no one to care for me,

Neither a friend to confide in, nor a companion.

لا أهل سامرّا رعوا لي ما مضى

عند الشدائد لا ولا بغداذ

Neither family of Samarra who might remember me,

Nor helper at times of hardship, neither neighbor nor kinsman.
